MKTG 5100 Students Kick Off Semester with First In-Person Session in Hartford

MSSRIB students and faculty

This past weekend, students in MKTG 5100: Business Fundamentals for Social Impact came together for their first in-person class at the Global Business Learning Center in Hartford. Taught by Professor Mary Caravella, the course, described as an “MBA in one class,” is essentially a bootcamp that introduces essential business concepts, frameworks, and analytical tools to help students better understand and communicate about business models, strategies, and performance.

The diverse cohort of students represents a wide range of backgrounds - from experienced business and sustainability leaders to nonprofit professionals, accelerated undergraduates, and those with studies in environmental science, human rights, and media strategy. Some students even flew in from as far as Texas and California to take part in the collaborative weekend!

Throughout the day, students connected through breakout groups and discussions, sharing what drew them to the MS in Social Responsibility & Impact in Business (MSSRIB) program and how they hope to apply these business fundamentals to drive positive change. They also presented organizations of interest to them and explained why.

The session also featured guest speaker Rory McGloin, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and the School of Business, and Founder & President of RPM Communication Consulting. He led an engaging conversation on the importance of understanding personal values and how they align with brand strategy.

By blending these discussions with hands-on learning about business models, students are gaining the tools to evaluate the desirability, feasibility, and viability of ideas in real-world contexts. The variety of professional and academic backgrounds in the room sparked dynamic conversations, offering unique perspectives that make this a great learning experience for everyone.
